Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
We will be offering a GATE Science enrichment class during March and April.  Forms will be distributed to GATE students during the Advocacy class.  Return these forms if you are interested by March 5th.

WVUSD Philosophy
  • The Walnut Valley Unified School District believes that all children, including the Gifted and Talented students, should be given the opportunity to learn new and challenging material. A rigorous curriculum is offered during the school day through differentiated instruction in all subject areas. We believe that flexible grouping provides opportunities for the students to interact with their intellectual peers and provides for continuous intellectual growth.
  • The teachers of GATE children receive training to provide quality education for all students and to focus on the development of the highest potential for each child. Each child's success is our top priority.
GATE Identification Process
  • New identification process starts with CST scores
    • Advanced level for two consecutive years in both ELA and Math
  • Recommendation rubric including test scores, teacher recommendations, report cards and leadership characteristics
  • Once in GATE, students stay in GATE unless parents request removal
  • If you are new to our district, please send COPIES of your child's last two years CST results to Mrs. Miles for review. Include your contact information; after review Mrs. Miles or the district office will contact you.
GATE Enrichment Classes at Chaparral Middle School
  • GATE enrichment classes will be offered both semesters. Students will be informed through the PA system of the GATE assemblies.
    • Students check into class and ask permission to attend the GATE assembly
    • Students then meet in the MPR for the GATE class presentation
    • Students bring registration form home for review with parents
    • Students return completed registration form with required signatures to Mrs. Miles by due date (Check form for due date)
    • Students will be scheduled into classes and registration form returned listing class student has been placed in
    • Students are required to attend ALL classes assigned or contact GATE class teacher or Mrs. Miles.
Student Responsibilities
  • GATE students need to work to their potential
  • Choose the assignments that challenge the mind
  • Complete quality work on time
  • Maintain grades that indicate the student is working at his/her full potential
  • Assume leadership roles
  • Realize that we control our own destiny
GATE in High School
  • When students enter high school, they must test to be placed into the honors/advanced placement classes. Once in the classes, kids must maintain a certain grade (85%) to progress through the honors/advanced placement classes.
Encourage your child to work to their full potential!
  • Student achievement, not GATE designation, helps ensure success.
    • Many students not identified as GATE will place into higher level classes and be successful.
    • College acceptance is based on what the child did, not on the GATE label.
