Language Arts 2019-2020-Period 5 Assignments

1. Choose a book template in Google Docs. Based on all of the data/research you've collected, create a table of contents (at least 4 chapters) for your book. See samples below. You can organize your chapters by problem/solution, cause/effect, chronology (what happened first, next, etc.).

2. Next, transfer your Chapter 1 from Session 4 onto this document.

3. Next, start typing your Chapter 2. I would suggest starting with a boxes and bullets outline to organize your ideas. Remember to include an intro, a minimum of 3 body paragraphs that focuses on different points, and a conclusion. Think back to how you categorized your notes on Malala. Using subheadings for your body paragraphs might be helpful. Also, when possible, reference your source material in your writing.

I'm going to give extra credit for all assignments you complete during this time off. For reading responses, create a Google Doc in the appropriate week's assignments, and submit them there. If you have any questions for me, you can ask me here.

Some of you marked "Turned In" for Week 1 and Week 2, but there are no attachments. I need to see your work in order to give you points. Please go back and attach your work.

Please choose ONE topic from the list to research. You will need to become an expert on this topic, so learn as much as you can about your topic. You may use additional resources that are not posted here, but I would begin with the lists below.

Hello Students!

I am so excited to begin our poetry unit with all of you! I will post a Google Slide at the start of each week with lessons for the day and instructions for homework. Please be prompt to our meetings, and be prepared for these meetings by having Google Classroom open. You will not only be learning about the art of poetry, you will also become poets yourself. I look forward to reading all of your amazing work. I have made a whopping $100 in my lifetime writing poetry (sigh). I challenge all of you to make more :).

A-day students (Periods 1, 3, & 5) will meet at 9:00 AM on Mondays and 10:00 AM on Wednesdays.

B-day students (Periods 2 & 6) will meet at 8:30 AM on Mondays and 10:30 AM on Wednesdays.

Final informational books are due.  Don't forget to include a glossary and works cited page. Bring a printed copy to class.  If you cannot print at home, you must bring a note from a parent.  Also, get your mid-quarter AR progress reports signed, and review for your Word Parts Test #7.

As you begin your last chapter, consider the following:

Revision for Sentence Complexity

1. Re-read each chapter.
2. Look for places where you can combine or alter sentences to make it more powerful.
3. Use punctuation marks to help clarify sentences:

*Colons signal a list or explanation
*Parentheses provide a place to insert extra information.
*Dashes point toward examples or more information.
*Commas separate items in a list.

Start With:

Denying girls’ education is a big problem. Some families can’t afford school. Other families aren’t allowed to send their girls to school.

Before you begin Chapter 3 of your informational book, consider using text features to strengthen your writing. (Chapter 3 is due by Thursday.)

1. Look through your chapters.
2. Where can you add some text features that might strengthen each chapter?
3. Review Chase's book on pet abandonment. See link below.

Consider these examples:

Boxes-filled with important facts, or stats, or even stories about the topic
Resource lists-websites, blogs, videos to learn more about the topic
Diagrams, illustrations, photographs
Charts and graphs
Glossaries-at the end of the text and definitions in the margins
Timelines
Hyperlinks and videos-on digital texts

Type up Chapter 2 for your informational books.  5 paragraphs minimum.  

Continue to take notes on your chosen topic.  Be ready to begin Chapter 2 of your books.  Review for Word Parts Test #6 on Friday.

You are starting your books today. Please follow the step by step instructions below.

1. Create a Google Doc here in Classroom.
2. Start typing chapter one. Use your boxes and bullets outline on teen activism.
3. Intro should include claim + 3 reasons. Each body paragraph should start with a transition and reason as a topic sentence. Conclusion should restate claim + 3 reasons.

Use the boxes and bullets outline sample below to help you organize your notes. These notes will help you write Chapter 1 of your informational books. You may review the sample flash drafts if you need additional ideas.

Choose at least 3 articles/videos from the following list. Continue to take notes in your Writer's Workshop notebook. These notes will help you to write Chapter 1 (Teen Activism) of your informational book. Don't forget to include the big idea for each article. See student sample.

Create a Google Doc here in Classroom. Use the notes you took on Malala Yousafzai and organize them into three categories. You should have three subheadings and then bullet point notes below. (Example: Malala's Background, What Happened to Malala, Malala's Fight for Education)

Create a Google Doc below for your 5-paragraph argumentative essay. There is a sample essay attached below for your reference. Your essay must follow proper MLA formatting and include a Works Cited page. See attached rubric below to make sure you have met all the requirements for this essay before turning it in.

Research notes for your argumentative essay should be completed before class on Monday.  You should have 4 reasons/evidence for your claim and at least 1 reason/evidence against.

1. Choose a topic from the list below. You should select an issue that is important to you or that at least interests you.
2. Before you begin your research, create a Google Doc below to record your findings. See my sample below.
3. Research articles/information about your topic. Make sure to find information for both sides of the issue. It is important that you are well-informed about the topic before you choose a side. You will need to copy all the links you find with potential information/evidence onto the Google Doc for future reference. Please include the title of the article with each link. (Miminum of 5 sources)

One pager book report posters are due before Thanksgiving break.  Please see the teacher if you need help.

Study for Word Parts Test #3.  All 27 word parts will be on the test.  Use Quizlet to review.  Also, make sure you prepare for your one-minute book report presentations.

Get your mid-quarter AR progress reports signed.

Make sure your Collection 1 Packet is complete with answers and notes.  Please continue to read for AR, and don't forget that your book report projects are due in 2 weeks.

Study for Word Parts Test #2.  Use Quizlet to review.  Link is in Google Classroom.  The Mixer retake test will be given on Wednesday at lunch time.

Complete Analyzing the Text questions on pg. 90 (1-7) in your Collections textbook.  There will be a test on "The Mixer" on Wednesday.  Review both the story and the critical vocabulary.  Word Parts test retakes on Wednesday at lunch.

Answer all 6 questions on the Close Read Application handout for "The Mixer".

Study for Word Parts Test #1 (Thursday).  Also, make sure you bring a book for your book report project by the end of the week.

Bring a book to class this week for your upcoming book report project. Remember, no graphic novels, and it must be a book you have not read before.

Complete your RACES response to "The Jumping Tree" in Google Classroom.  Don't forget to label your sentences.  Bring your Word Parts Chart packet to class each block.

Please get signatures for 2nd Quarter STAR reports.  New point goals are due 12/18.  We will be having our writing celebration this Thursday/Friday.  Don't forget to bring a copy of your personal narrative (and cookies to share).

Review your notes on Rey's thoughts and actions throughout the story. What words would you use to describe his character traits. For example, you might describe him as brave, anxious, or foolish. Cite text evidence from the story in your response. Use RACES and label your sentences.

Please bring a printed copy of the final draft of your personal narrative on Wednesday.  We will be having a writing celebration on Thursday/Friday.  If possible, please bring in cookies to share with your classmates.

1) Reconsider your LEAD. Is it effective in grabbing your reader's attention? Did you hint at the problem/experience to come? Review the PDF file on Leads in Narrative Writing. How can you make your lead better?

2) Review your narrative checklist. Is there anything you can add at this point to make your story better? Where can you add dialogue, inner thinking, and figurative language?

3) Elaborate on an important scene/stretch out the story's problem. Give a step-by-step replay of this scene/event. Additionally, go over your story and add precise details and descriptive language whereever possible to help create a vivid image in the reader's mind.

4) What is your story REALLY about? Use your external/internal map to help reangle your story for deeper meaning. Also, work on symbolism. Is there a person/place/thing that might hold special meaning?

5) Reconsider your ending. Does it wrap up your story effectively? Also, go through your story to see where you can add varied and subtle transitions to show passage of time or sequence of events.

Consider what your story is REALLY about. How do you show this and tie up loose ends?

Please create a Google Doc below and write two alternate endings to your story. After you have written two, please choose the best one and use that for the final draft of your personal narrative.

Read the story "The House" and answer the question below. You will be writing a one-paragraph response using the R.A.C.E.S. strategy. Be sure to create a Google Doc here in Classroom, and make sure you turn in your assignment when it is completed. All sentences must be clearly labeled and color-coded; responses will not be accepted otherwise. Use spelling and grammar check to edit your work.
