8th Grade Guitar (Fall Semester) Assignments

Students will submit their final recording and video no later than December 3rd.

SOLOISTS!
If you are performing a solo you can submit your final video by using the Flipgrid link or upload a video directly to google classroom.

DUOS & TRIOS
If you are performing a duet or trio you need to edit your videos so both of you are seen at the same time. I recommend you use https://upbeatmusicapp.com/ and create an account using your google login. When your group has finished your video please download a copy and upload it as an attachment to this assignment on google classroom. Only one member of your group needs to submit your final video, but if it is not turned in by Friday it will be marked late for the entire group.


Performance Guidelines

Duration: Song must be between 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes and 30 seconds long.
Who plays?: Each performer in the group must have a solo in the song. (part where just they perform)
Parts: Each song performed with more than one member must have a harmony part added. (at least 2 parts)
Song chosen must be school appropriate and clean. Songs that need a clean version will not be accepted. Songs can be denied if deemed inappropriate by the teacher. Song must include a section that is TABs or singing with chords.
Performance must be memorized. You should be looking at the camera when performing. I should see each performer's face and guitar in the videos.
Performance rubric will be passed out separately.

Attend the Virtual Winter Concert on Thursday, December 3rd at 7:00pm.

After you have played Pass Off #4 in class for me and passed turn this assignment in.

This will be a public recording that class members can see. Make sure I can see both of your hands clearly in the video. Please record the song "Moonset" from Lesson 13 on cmilearn.org (just record your part). This is a performance so only record it when you are confident that you can play the entire song without mistakes at a steady tempo. Please listen to the background with headphones while recording.

You will take this quiz Thursday during class.

The background track for the song must be submitted on Google Classroom in a google form along with starting and stopping times if you are using a background. If students are playing acoustically without a backing track then a total performance time needs to be submitted on Google Classroom in a google form. This is due on November 12th at the end of class. For each day the group has not been submitted sheet music points will be lost.

Complete this worksheet before the end of class.

The title of the song and sheet music/TABs must be submitted on Google Classroom in the form of a photo or google document by November 9th at the end of class to receive full points.
-Students are responsible for finding copies of the sheet music/TABs on their own.
-You may not use a song from Cmilearn.org.
-The song must include TABs. If you choose a song with chords only then you MUST sing the lyrics of the song. Lyrics must also be submitted for approval if you choose to play chords.
-For each day the group has not been submitted sheet music points will be lost.

Complete the worksheet during class November 9, 2020.

1. Practice Simple Gifts in Lesson 15 on cmilearn.org.
2. Record yourself playing the chords on flipgrid.
3. For this recording please play your guitar WITH the music playing quietly in the background. Turn you computer audio down to a lower volume and play along with the song. I need to hear your guitar and the singer in the background.
4. Make sure your right and left hand clearly show on the screen.

1. Practice the rhythm study 4 in lesson 12 on cmilearn.org.
2. Make sure you are picking your eighth notes in an up-down pattern.
3. Adjust your camera so your right hand is clearly showing.
4. Record the exercise making sure you are keeping a steady beat.

Complete your third pass off in class or during tutorial time.

Write 2 verses of lyrics for a blues song.

The "A" lines" in verse 1 should be the same. The last word of the "B" line should rhyme with the previous 2 "A" lines.

Verse 2 should follow the same rules, but should have new "A" and "B" lines.

Open the slide, go to file-make a copy and save your own copy of the slide. When you have finished filling in the lines attach it to the assignment and turn it in.

Group may consist of 1, 2, or 3 people total. Participants must be members of the guitar program. Group members must be chosen and submitted through google classroom in a google form by the end of class on November 2nd in order to receive full points. For each day the group has not been submitted points will be lost. If you do not choose by November 6th I will pick your group for you. You may NOT change groups after you turn in your google form.

Create a 12 bar blues progression. Make a new copy of the google document and use the D chord as your 1 chord. After you have completed the google document add it as an attachment to this assignment and turn it in.

This will be a public recording that class members can see. Make sure I can see both of your hands clearly in the video. Please record the song "Going For It" from Lesson 10 on cmilearn.org. This is a performance so only record it when you are confident that you can play the entire song without mistakes at a steady tempo.

Complete this in class while we learn about the new instrument.

You will perform your composition in class on Wednesday.

Follow the directions and fill out the response form while watching the performers in class. Use complete sentences.

Complete the google form in class on Monday 10/26.

Write a composition for TABs with the following instructions

1. Write at least 8 measures of TABs on a blank piece of paper. (-1 for each missing measure)
2. Write an interesting (school appropriate) title at the top of the page.
3. Write a 4/4 time signature.
4. You may use any combination of quarter, half, whole, and eighth notes and rests you would like. Use appropriate rhythm markings. (add the lines under the. notes)
5. You MUST at least 1 tie somewhere in the song. (-1 for missing tie)
6. You MUST use all 6 strings. (-1 for each missing string)
7. You will be playing this song for the class so make it something you can play.
8. Do NOT copy someone else's work/song.
9. When you are completely done take a photo of the song and attach it to this assignment before turning it in.
10. When the photo is attached turn the assignment in.

Write 3 sentences explaining what you did. Each complete sentence is worth one point.

Complete the google form before you leave class on Monday, 10/19/20.

I am grading the strings and rhythms played for accuracy.

This Thursday you will be asked to perform the song "3 to Get Ready" from Lesson 7 on Cmilearn.org in class as a solo. Make sure you are ready to play as soon as class begins.

If you missed a listening example, find the appropriate youtube video attached below and watch it, add your reflection before you submit the journal.

Please browse on youtube to find an interesting cover (instrumental only) version of a popular song you like. It should not have any words. When you have found a song you like then complete the attached google form. It is due on Wednesday by the end of class.

Submit a recording of yourself playing through your assigned song. At the beginning of the video please introduce yourself with your name and the title of the song you will be playing. I should only hear your guitar and no background tracks. I also need to see both hands on your guitar. This recording is worth a total of 20 points. See point distribution below;

Level 1 Players: Pick between "He's got the whole world" and "Down in the Valley". (lesson 3)

Level 2 Players: Pick between "This Train" and "Midnight Special". (lesson 11)

Write a song using the assigned chords and one of the given time signatures. Things to include are;
1. Title
2. Time signature
3. At lease 3 of the assigned chords
4. At least 8 measures of music
5. Correct number of strum markings per measure
