Mock Trial

Welcome to Chaparral's Mock Trial Team 2022-2023! It's going to be an exciting year of learning and competing. We had our BEST showing at the LA County Mock Trial Competition last year. Our Chaparral team finished 3rd in ALL of LA County (more than 40+ teams)! We are looking forward to another great year and advancing to the Finals this year! I hope you are too! :)

1. What is Mock Trial?

Mock Trial is an academic team here at Chaparral that will compete this upcoming school year against other middle schools at the county level. The trial itself is a simulation of a criminal case, in which students portray each of the principals in the cast of courtroom characters.

2. What will we do in Mock Trial?

Student teams will study a hypothetical case, conduct legal research, and receive guidance from the Diamond Bar HS Mock Trial team in courtroom procedures and trial preparation. Students participate as lawyers, witnesses, court clerks, and bailiffs, thus acquiring a working knowledge of our judicial system.

3. Will there be practice?

Yes. Since Mock Trial is a competitive team and not simply a club, principal cast members will be expected to be committed to practice so that they can study and learn their roles. All practices will be after school but time length and frequency may vary depending on necessity and competition dates.

4. What will I learn from Mock Trial?

The Mock Trial Program encourages young people to develop their analytical abilities and communication skills while gaining increased self-confidence.  You will also continue to develop in the areas of logical reasoning, research, and public speaking.

5. Who is in charge of Mock Trial?

The Los Angeles Mock Trial Program is overseen by the Constitutional Rights Foundation. This year will mark Los Angeles County's 39th Annual Mock Trial Competition.  This year's participation is expected to include over 2,000 students from Los Angeles County.
