History/Social Sciences

Sixth Grade

At the sixth grade level, social science is devoted to the study of humankind and the ancient civilizations.  Through an integrated approach, students study major historical events and periods.  Critical thinking skills and cooperative learning strategies encourage active participation and interactive teaching methods throughout the learning process.  Students are assessed through projects which reflect the different learning styles of the “multiple intelligences.”  Areas of focus include early humankind, the beginnings of civilization in the Near East and Africa, the foundation of Western ideas in Greece, and the early civilizations of India, China, and the Roman Empire.  Through their studies, students gain an appreciation of cultural diversity and are able to grasp the relationship of their lives to ancient cultures.

Seventh Grade

Students in the seventh grade study medieval world history, world geography, and world religions.  Emphasis is placed on the African, Asian, South American and European cultures during the medieval period and how these cultures affect our society today.  We focus on critical thinking skills using primary sources; participation skills through cooperative group activities; and basic study skills such as map reading and organizing information.  Content reading and writing skills are also emphasized.
