Listening Assignment #4

In the attached document called "Orchestra Listening Assignment," you will see a grid with different pieces of music. The different eras of music are represented: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, 21st Century. There is also one FREE SPACE, in which you can select a piece of your own choosing. You will choose one piece to listen to per class period, which will come out to two pieces per week. Ideally, you will complete one on Monday, and one on Wednesday, and then submit them together on Wednesday.
The document called "Listening Assignment: Questions," has two sets of the same questions for each piece you listen to for the week. You will submit them both at the same time.

You will complete this assignment each week until the end of the school year.

FlipGrid 4/27 in Google Classroom

FlipGrid 4/27

This week, I'm only giving you ONE Flipgrid to do, because it might take you a couple of days to get it right. I recommend starting to teach your person today, and then filming the final product later in the week. It is due on Friday.

Teach someone in your house how to play your instrument! Have them play a D major scale or Mary Had a Little Lamb, or something else simple of your choosing. Your video can be a maximum of 5 minutes, so it can show any number of things, such as:
- The process of teaching (You can start and stop your video to show the different parts of learning)
- You demonstrating, and then your "student" trying
- Your student trying to play, and you correcting them
- Etc.

No instrument? Teach a family member how to read music in your clef. Teach them the names of the lines and spaces, and then quiz them on what they learned. Film this process and upload on FlipGrid.

Videos have a maximum of 5 minutes. You do NOT have to use this whole time, but can if you want to.

High Hopes Virtual Orchestra: DO THIS FIRST in Google Classroom

High Hopes Virtual Orchestra: DO THIS FIRST

Hi Everyone,
Here are the PDFs of High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco. This is a really simple arrangement in C major. Please download and record yourself playing the part you NORMALLY play in orchestra (violin 1 and 2...I'm looking at you!)
I would like the metronome to be set at quarter note=165. If you don't have a metronome, you can download a free one on your phone or tablet. I use one called "Soundbrenner." But you can also just type "metronome" in Google, and a metronome will pop up.
You've all filmed and uploaded videos of yourself playing before. You need to film yourself and upload it here. For this, I would prefer that you don't use "portrait" mode...have someone film you, or set your camera/phone up so that it films you from the normal camera. That way it doesn't look like you're playing backwards.
You should plug your headphones into your metronome and record yourself playing. This will keep us all at the same tempo for when I put all the videos together. Make sure that you give yourself a few seconds before you start playing so that I have room to edit. If you want to smile and wave, that would be good. Then when you're done, leave a few seconds before cutting the video off. Smile and wave then too!

I would like everything pretty separated, with the exception of the slurred notes.

I would like to have your videos uploaded by Monday evening at 11:59pm (If you can get it in sooner, that would be great...I'll be able to start working on it). MAKE THIS THE FIRST ONE YOU DO. I know I posted all those video assignments yesterday, and tomorrow, you will be receiving all of your work from all of your classes. Put the other music stuff aside, and make this your priority. After you film this and upload it, then you can move on to the other stuff.

If you don't have your instrument (I'm crying about that!), then you obviously can't do this one....that's why I'm opening this up to Sinfonia AND Philharmonia...between all of you, we should have a super giant orchestra's worth of videos to work with. This is going to be AWESOME!

2nd violin, viola, cello, bass seating placement in Google Classroom

2nd violin, viola, cello, bass seating placement

Hello Philharmonia!

Now is the time for your seating placement "test." You must submit a video with the following excerpt. If you are a VIOLINIST who submitted an audition for the 1st violin, you do NOT have to do this video. EVERYONE else must complete this video so I can assign your seating placement.
If you do not have a video uploaded by NEXT FRIDAY, September 13th, by 11:59 pm, you will automatically placed last chair.

If you do not have a solo piece, I am giving you an alternative excerpt that you can use. Remember, your solo can be ANYTHING. If you want to choose your own excerpt from our music as your solo, that's fine. I'm looking for something that shows off what you can do.

Nothing has to be memorized. You may film in selfie mode, please make sure I can see your face so I know who you are. If your name on Google Classroom is different than the name by which I know you, please include your name that you go by in the submission.

2nd violins:
March of the Mathemagicians: measure 21-28
Kimbark Song: Measure 33-40
Solo of your choosing OR Hyde Park: Measure 45-51

Violas:
March of the Mathemagicians: measure 21-28
Kimbark Song: Measure 33-40
Solo of your choosing OR Hyde Park: 18-25

Cellos:
March of the Mathemagicians: measure 13-20
Kimbark Song: Measure 41-48
Solo of your choosing OR Hyde Park: 18-25

Basses:
Hyde Park: Measure 18-25
Solo of your choosing OR March of the Mathemagicians: meausure 13-20
(BASSES, you only have one excerpt, that is NOT a mistake on my part.)

If you need help filming/uploading your video(s), please make an appointment to use the practice rooms and the ipad during lunch or after school next week. There will be sign up sheets for the available times on the practice room doors.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

First violin section video audition
Due Sep 6, 11:59 PM

To audition for first violin, you must submit a video through Google Classroom. You may film yourself at home, OR you may set up a time with me to use a practice room and one of my cameras. I will have a sign up sheet outside of practice room 1, and you may sign up to do your recording there.

This is NOT a graded assignment, and only the violins who want to try for 1st violin need to submit a video.

You will play the excerpts listed below, and you will also play a 30 second excerpts of a solo of your choice (you do NOT Have to start at the beginning. Play the best 30 seconds in the piece!)
Please submit the video as ONE video (not three separate videos for the excerpts and the solo). You will NOT be disqualified for submitting multiple videos, but it will make my life easier if you submit it as one!

The video is due by NEXT FRIDAY, September 6th, by 11:59pm. If you do not submit it before then, you will not be considered for 1st violin.

Here are the excerpts you must submit:
