Wind Ensemble S1 2020 Assignments

This is your final week of assignments! This week will be a little different. :)
Read the instructions on the DL Curriculum below. This week you will
1. turn in your theory challenge scores
2. comment on your classmates compositions and answer my question in your noteflight group forum section
3. Add to our class playlist slide presentation.

Turn in your school instruments, girls' uniforms on Tuesday at your scheduled time.
Read the DL Curriculum for assignments this week which include:
1. Journal activity and assignment
2. composition (read instructions)
3. theory challenge #6 (#7 is optional)

Zoom meetings on Monday and Wednesdays at 1:30.

Open the DL Curriculum document below for the overview of assignments for the week. Follow the instructions on the document and click on the hyperlinks (the underlined words in blue) to access the music history, composition, and theory assignments and information. Continue to practice your instrument and work on your smartmusic assignment.
All assignments are due by Friday at 3:00 p.m. and late assignments will not be accepted.
Zoom meetings will be held on Monday and Wednesday according to this schedule. You will be let into your class at the following times:
12:30 Cadet band
1:00 Concert and Symphonic Band
1:30 Wind Ensemble
I am available on Fridays 1:00-1:30 for individual help.
Zoom codes will be posted 10 minutes before each meeting time. Please use appropriate and respectful online behavior when joining the meetings.

Hello Wind Ensemble students :)
First of all, be sure to take the Covid Wind Ensemble survey if you have not already done so. The deadline for completing the survey is Monday, April 20. It has been available here for two weeks. I am missing responses from about 20 people.

Now for this week's assignments....
Here is another explanation about what you will be doing this week!
1. Open Wind Ensemble DL Curriculum and read over the assignments for the week. For those that like to work ahead, you may do so. Each week you will continue to practice your instrument, (log your practice time), AND, have assignments in music theory, music history, and music composition. Follow the schedule on the DL curriculum.
2. The personal online music journal will be a written assignment about a period or style of music and you will turn a new entry in every week. You will turn this in everyweek.
3. The music theory challenge score sheet will be something you can keep in your drive, and keep adding to it as you complete the exercises in the coming weeks. I will let you know when I would like you to turn it in.
4. The Elements of Music Worksheet will be used as a worksheet after you read the Unit about the Elements of Music. Turn it in in google classroom.

I know that these are unchartered waters for all of us, but I hope you will get something out of these assignments and learn some interesting things!

This is for 8th grade students only! Using this website as a starting point, research some careers that involve music. Find some that interest you and fill out the google doc. Also think about how music will be a part of your life in the future, even if you pursue a different career path.

Research careers in music using the link below. Which ones might you find appealing or interesting? ANswer the questions on the attached google doc. Also consider how music will be part of your life in the future if you plan to be in a career other than music or the arts industry.

Practice and record the honor band scales and required solo by video and turn in here. All students will be assessed regardless of whether you are taking the audition or not.

If you are sending in a video to SCSBOA be sure to follow these guidelines.

1. Record audition video.
a. Explanation on Round One Video Audition Tips. Watch BOTH video’s: https://www.scsboa.org/middle-school-honor-groups/
b. Video should include the following;
i. Say/state your First and Last Name as soon as the video starts
ii. Play the required scale(s)
iii. Play the required excerpt(s)
1. DO NOT splice or edit your recording.
2. Video must be one continuous take.
c. Use the following naming convention for your video file: LAST NAME_FIRST NAME_LAST FOUR DIGITS OF PARENT PHONE NUMBER: Example File Name: Doe_John_0534.mp4

2. Fill out the Audition Application for middle school on the SCSBOA website.
3. Upload your video into the appropriate Dropbox folder.
4. Go BACK to the original application page to submit payment to complete your application. If payment is not received your video will NOT be considered.
5. Submit Application and receive a payment confirmation email. Keep a copy of the confirmation email.
CHECK LIST
1. Did you name your video file with the correct format?

2. Did you upload your video in the correct Dropbox and receive a confirmation email from Dropbox?
If YES! GREAT JOB! Make a copy of the confirmation for record.
If NO, your video did NOT get uploaded.
3. Did you submit payment and receive a payment confirmation email If YES! GREAT JOB! J Make a copy of the confirmation for record. If NO, your video will be deleted and it will not be considered L.
4. Did you tell your friends they should try-out for the SCSBOA Honor Group with you?

Application for auditions can be found at the link below. Applications and videos are due October 26th. You will need my membership number which is 6563 to fill out the application. On October 26th, you will also send your video to me.

All students are encouraged to audition for this wonderful opportunity. However, since there are fees involved, it cannot be mandatory. There is a fee of $35 to apply. For those selected, there is a $160 participation fee. If you are selected, you must be willing to pay this fee and attend all rehearsals and concert. Please look at the dates and read the information on the website. All Wind Ensemble students will need to learn the music and will receive a playing assessment grade in band for their work regardless of whether they send in a video audition or not.

Note: I will grade all students on their videos which they will also submit to me. For students who do not wish to audition, you will still receive a grade from me for this project.

The greek gods are like a study in human psychology. Each one had characteristics that show different personalities, different motives, different strengths and different weaknesses. Read through the attachment and find the god that you are most like; then create a illustration (by hand) following the instructions.

Assignment:
Read through the information above and choice one possible scene from Achille’s life that you can illustrate. This could be when his mother held his heel and dipped him into the River Styx, or his heroism during the Trojan War. You may draw, paint, color your illustration on paper. These illustrations will be part of our concert program on October 22 and made into a slide show that will be shown at the concert.Due date is Sept. 20 for illustration.

Answer all questions including the reflection and have your parent sign.

Print out your part and start practicing for the game on September 6th!

Read the band handbook attached. Print and sign the last page. Read the Grading policy. Sign , Print, and turn in Section indicated.

Complete the assignment. Turn in a google doc for your assignment. Be ready to share your slide presentation between December 14-18

Brass record Option 5.
Woodwinds Record Option 3 with the #4 articulation style.
Percussion Record Option 5, except mallets, record Option 5 on actual mallet instruments in band room.

Record these scales and turn in: Concert Bb, Concert Eb, with directions given in class.

Watch all recommended videos for you instrumnent. Then, fill in the google doc at the bottom, entitled Instrument Care and Maintenance.

You will have 30 minutes to answer 50 questions. When you are done, do this:

3. Create a Validation Code. (This links your score with yoru name and eliminates cheating).Then copy it to your clipboard.

Complete this exercise if you play Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium, Basoon

Find your part in the attachments below. Print, practice, and memorize your part for DBHS for sept 16. This is in cut time and fast, but you may practice in 4/4 to learn it. Final tempo is @ 132 for the half note!
